Purple Heart Band Race has been around for about 15 years now and hosted by the Heartland Federation as a fundraiser. It is a chance for breeders from all over the USA to send their top young birds in to have tested and possibly win some money. The name "Purple Heart" for this race came about as that is highest award given to individuals in the military for their of courage/bravery. Racing Homers/Homing Pigeons have been linked to the military for centuries and have transported important messages through heavy combat when other means of communication wasn't an option. Translating today with our feathered friends, they must have great determination/courage to find their way home over water, mountains, and in some cases inclement weather over hundreds of miles. Purple Heart Race is a band race where individuals buy bands in order to enter their birds off what they consider the best pigeons they have. When banding youngsters, every fancier hopes that that youngster will be the best outstanding racing pigeon, but never knows when birds are just in the nest banding age how they will turn out. The birds in the auction are the top 15 birds in this year's race and flew not only the 350M plus Purple Heart Race, but many raced the entire young bird racing season, and scored. Purple Heart Band Race is club racing at its finest, and has a long history of making quality impact birds available to the serious racing pigeon fancier.
