Peperman Racing Pigeons

The Peperman strain is a historic racing pigeon family originating in Belgium, most famously associated with Louis Peperman and his descendants. These birds were known for their speed, stamina, and distinctive plumage, and they played a significant role in European racing pigeon history.

Origins and Bloodlines Louis Peperman’s birds were mostly blue, blue chequer, and some grizzle types. His family included notable names such as Vandeweyer, Cattrysse, Tournier, Vereecke, Van Spitael, Vandeweghe, Fabry, Van Hee, Hector Desmet, Van Riel, and Goossens. The grizzle type in the family came through the Cattrysse/Goossens line.

Famous Descendants One of the most celebrated pigeons in racing history, Champion ‘Figo’ of Reynaert, had Louis Peperman blood in his veins. Both of Figo’s grandsires were Pepermans — DE-GOEN (10× firsts) and DE Hengst (14× firsts), the latter from Robert Venus. This connection cemented the Peperman strain’s reputation for producing top-tier race birds.

Belgian Peperman Bloodlines Robert Venus, a major Belgian breeder, produced several “Ace of Pepermans” with multiple first-place finishes, including:

DE GOEN – 10× 1st

DE HENGST – 14× 1st

SPRINTER – 6× 1st

FAVORI – 12× 1st

DE VURIGE – 10× 1st

LOUIS-ROZA – 8× 1st

MUSTANG – 6× 1st

DE CRACK – 12× 1st

Legacy and Rarity The Peperman strain was once a “hot” racing pigeon in Europe, with birds achieving long-distance records and multiple championships. However, it is now considered a rare strain, with fewer breeders and racers than in the past. Some collectors and fanciers still maintain and race them, and they occasionally appear in auctions or private sales.

Why They’re Notable

Proven racing success in Europe, especially in long-distance events.

Strong family lines with multiple champions.

Distinctive color types (blue, blue chequer, grizzle) that set them apart from modern crossbreds.

Historical significance in the evolution of racing pigeon strains.

If you’re interested in Pepermans, you may find them in specialized racing pigeon auctions or through Belgian and European fanciers, as they are not commonly bred in the U.S. today.
